Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem
It has become a tradition that Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir every year – leading up to Easter – performs Johannes Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” in a wonderful chamber musical version for choir, two soloists, and four-handed piano.
“Ein Deutsches Requiem” is certainly a masterpiece, a deeply personal work, possibly composed in response to the loss of his own mother or Robert Schumann’s death.
The work, consisting of seven movements, is not intended as a liturgical or religious composition, but rather a universally comforting piece. The text also deviates from the usual Latin text for the Mass for the Dead, instead using German versions of the same texts taken from Luther’s Bible translation. While the typical Latin Requiem Mass often begins with a prayer for the deceased, Brahms opens his work with a prayer for the living: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The choral movements are both moving and powerful, with interjections from the two soloists providing commentary and reflection before the work concludes with the blessing for the departed.
TYST ÄR DET RUM
Once again this year, Mogens Dahl Kammerkor hosts the opening concert at the Copenhagen Light Festival on the occasion of Midwinter, February 2, also known as Candlemas after the Latin term for Candle Mass, Missa Candelarum.
Light is also the focal point for the evening’s premiere, “Light, oh light,” by the Swedish composer Per Gunnar Petersson, with lyrics by the Indian Nobel laureate and mystic Tagore.
Music by the Swedish composer Per Gunnar Petersson has frequently appeared on the Chamber Choir’s programs in recent years, leading to a closer collaboration. He has been appointed the choir’s new Composer in Residence, and this work for choir and organ is his first in this capacity.
From 2014 until his death in 2019, the also Swedish Sven-David Sandström served as the Composer in Residence for the Chamber Choir, composing several significant works for them. One of these, the choral suite “Hvor er så dejligt som din klode” (Where is as lovely as your globe), will also be performed during the concert.
The concert features another premiere: a new piece for clarinet, harmonica, and choir by the Danish harmonica player and composer Mathias Heise.
The concert begins with a small evocative piece of contemporary Swedish choral music by Gabriella Gullin, “Tyst är det rum” (Silent is the room).
These contemporary works are juxtaposed with two older choral pieces from the Renaissance by Claudio Monteverdi and Cristóbal de Morales, and additionally, music by Stravinsky: “Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet,” performed by Jonas Frølund.

Kontakion
In this programme The Delius Singers trace the development of music for Orthodox Christian rituals from the 10th Century to the present day. We start with the earliest sources of Znamenny chant, a style which developed from Byzantine chant in various centres across the Orthodox world, including Galicia, Kiev, Valaam, and Moscow. We show some of the earliest examples of singing different lines together in polyphony - a style which can sound remarkable to modern ears - and spend the central section of the programme demonstrating the extraordinary flowering of choral settings in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are some famous Russian composers amongst this group, including Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov, but also many gems by lesser known composers in other Orthodox traditions.
